I've been dyeing feathers today. As you do ... I mean, I know it's a bit eccentric, but I'd watched this video on YouTube and fancied trying it. I've got several pheasant feathers collected when out walking, but they're too handsome to apply paint to. Instead, I collected pigeon feathers. Not the prettiest of birds when it comes to plumage but you can always find their discarded feathers on roadside verges. I used the gell plate, acrylic paint and stencils, and had mixed results. Not as accomplished as those featured in the video, but pleasing all the same. The paper underneath these feathers was a clean-up sheet, and makes a nice background for them. Using a black ink pad and a homemade stamp, I added the dotty pattern too. Don't know what I'll use the feathers for, but at some point an idea will pop into my head. If you've got any thoughts of your own, let me know in the comments below. Thanks for stopping by.
To add to my seemingly never ending list of works-in-progress, I've started making a fabric bowl. Or should I call it a fabric basket? I'm not sure. Anyway, I've made the odd bowl or two before, like this blue & white one that I keep cotton perle in. I decided to use upholstery material, which has both advantages & disadvantages. On the good side, it has a certain stiffness, which helps the bowl stay in shape. On the irritating side, the kind of material I'm using frays like mad, and I'm forever picking up threads off the carpet. The bowl's a simple construction, and I've used a circle of cardboard covered with brown felt for the base. It'll look much better when I've embroidered and stitched into it. I've made a start on that, and appliqued on a rectangle of plum coloured velvet for extra interest. When not stitching, I've been catching up on my reading. I finished C J Sansom's 'Dark Fire'. Real...
